N Talks About… His New 3M LED P1610 Polarizing Light

Hello, everyone! It’s me, N! Mummy asked me to tell all of you about my new light, since I have so much fun playing with it. I’m so happy that I have a new light, because I can now flip through my books in the bedroom with Mummy and Daddy, while waiting for Didi and Meimei to fall asleep. It used to be so dark that I couldn’t see the pictures in my books properly, and I asked Mummy if she could fitch (that’s how I pronounce ‘switch’) on the ceiling lights, but she said no. Apparently, Didi and Meimei need the room to be dark, so that they know it’s time to sleep. Daddy tried moving his bedside lamp nearer to my mattress, but it was still too dark, and my eyes always got tired after a while.

When we came back from Singapore after Chinese New Year, Mummy took out this new light from the big bag, and said it was for me! I love receiving presents, and Daddy helped to set it up for me. Actually, it was so simple that I could have done it myself. The light is really light, and I can lift it up with just one hand. Maybe that’s also because I’m super strong. Anyway, I quickly took some books out to try reading with my new light, and it was so much better! Daddy showed me how to “tap, tap, tap” the light, and woah, it’s sooo cool! It can get brighter and darker, and even change from blue to yellow light! Mummy says the light isn’t blue, but I think it looks a bit blue when it’s very bright.

Reading with my new light

Bak Kwa tastes better with my new light too

Did you know that my light can be turned in many different directions too? It can go left, right, up, and down! The top part of the light can be bent easily, and I can make it go in any direction I want. So fun, right? I like to play with it, because I can make shadows on the wall when I turn the light to face the wall.

Turning the light

I thought my new light was just for reading, but one day, Mummy found a homework file in my bag, and said I had to start doing homework. I didn’t want to, but she said I didn’t have a choice, and brought my reading light to my playroom. The ceiling light in there could be switched on, so I didn’t understand why she brought my reading light there, but when she fitched it on, I realised that I could see the words and pictures in my homework file better.

I finished my homework quickly, then Mummy made me read some of my old Chinese books from Berries. She said I have to “revise”, but I don’t know what that means. Does it mean read again and again until I’m super bored? *yawn*

Mummy was quite silly at first, you know. She put the light on my right, then as I was pointing at the words as I read, she said, “Ey, how come there’s a shadow?” She forgot that she had to put the light on the opposite side of my writing hand! So silly, this Mummy. Daddy asked her if she learnt Physics before, but she rolled her eyes and ignored him.

This is the wrong side, Mummy!

See? No more shadow!

I love my new light, because it’s really cool and fun to play with. Daddy and Mummy like it because they say it’s a very good light, and Mummy was telling Daddy something about how the light has a filter to let only comfortable light through, and to convert harmful light rays into comfortable light. I’ll let her tell you all those details later, okay? I want to show you how to tap, tap, tap my light!

Let me show you how my new light works!

The 3M LED P1610 Polarizing Light has an adjustable LED colour change, offering 5 colour selections (Cool White to Warm White) to mimic natural light patterns, and uses the brand’s patented 3M Polarizing Filter Technology to effectively reduce glare for better physical eye health. According to research from the Light and Health Program at Rensselaer’s Lighting Research Center in Troy, New York, the closer artificial lighting is to mimicking natural daylight patterns, the higher the tendency for a person to be happier, and thus more productive. Since more intense or detailed activities such as studying requires higher lux levels, we can switch the colour of the lamp to a ‘Cool White’ in the mornings, then change it to a ‘Warm White’ when winding down for the day, to encourage calm and relaxation while reading a book.

The 3M LED P1610 Polarizing Task Light is also fitted with 3M’s Polarizing Filter Technology, which consists of a 3M proprietary optical film to reduce glare by up to 80%. Such rays occur when harmful light bounces off surfaces and creates reflective light (glare), a by-product when light bounces off a glossy surface material, causing strain on the eyes. While most other lamps allow normal light rays comprising both comfortable and harmful light to enter, the 3M polarizing optical film only filters comfortable light through; at the same time, it converts the harmful rays into optimal lighting as well, which means that only optimal light reaches the eyes. This not only minimizes the immediate eye strain to allow for longer hours of comfortable reading, but also decreases risk of long-term effects such as cataracts and macular degeneration (a leading cause of vision loss where a small central portion of the retina, known as the macula, deteriorates).

The 3M LED P1610 Polarizing Light retails at $289 (w GST), and is available in two colours – Pure White and Solid Black, at all Popular bookstores and selected Best Denki and Challenger outlets.
