Ever since we got back from Adelaide, we often find ourselves asking each other, “Where can we go this weekend?”. It sounds strange, I know, because we were away for only nine months, and not nine years, but there was one significant difference: Noah was older, and would no longer nap in the Manduca carrier while we visited the shopping malls or ran errands. In fact, shopping is quite a challenge with him around, so we have to look for child-friendly activities instead. Needless to say, we end up staying at home a lot, because after we trawl the Internet for ideas, it’s either too late to go somewhere fun, or we’d feel too lazy to even step out of the house.
Cheekiemonkies was one of our favourite blogs to check out for suggestions, but Noah was a little too young back then for many of the activities we saw on the blog. We did check out some of the child-friendly eating places, and the ones we visited were great hits, especially when we went with our friends who also have young children.
Now that Noah is a preschooler, there are a lot more activities that he can participate in, though we still try to figure out where to go every weekend. When Kelvin of Cheekiemonkies shared that he wrote a book called “Got Kids, Go Where?”, I thought it was a brilliant idea, as there are tons of parents like us who struggle to think of interesting places to go with our kids!
Got Kids, Go Where? has a whooping 500 different activities that we can do with children. That’s a LOT of things to do, and places to see, all within our tiny little red dot of a country. Okay, some include Sentosa, Malaysia, and our neighbouring islands, but I’m just amazed that there are so many options available. I mean, just take a look at the Contents Page. There are seven different categories, with tons of sub-categories, and plenty of suggestions for each of them.

Now, I know some of you might be wondering why you should buy the book, instead of just surfing the net each time you want to find something to do with your kids. Well, I personally think it’s easier to refer to the book, as everything is categorised so neatly, and you can find relevant information such as the address, and opening hours, in the book. On top of that, Kelvin reviews and rates each of them, so you can gauge whether a particular activity is suitable for your kid. The reviews aren’t skimpy two-liners, by the way. They are concisely-written, but with enough detail to give you a good idea of what the place offers. He also tells you what his three adorable kids like about each place, so you know that they are definitely kid-approved.
I’ve tried looking for child-friendly activities online on many occasions, and often spent quite some time scrolling through the search results to find what I need to know. Also, have you tried trying to find something on the Internet with a three-year-old sitting on your lap, hitting random keys while you’re trying to read something, and constantly asking, “What are you doing, mummy? What’s this? Can I touch this? Can I watch videos?” Fun times. Not. But I digress.
I especially like the bonus category, which provides lists of 10 things to do in certain areas, such as Kranji Countryside, and Jurong, which are places relatively foreign to me. Now, my problem isn’t finding things to do, but finding the time to check out these places! I’m already looking forward to the next school holidays, when I have Noah to myself for the entire day, and we can go out to explore all these interesting places.
I strongly suggest that you get a copy of this book as soon as possible, so that you can start planning for the next long weekend or school break.
