‘Marky Polo in Tokyo’ tells the story of Marky Polo, a young pangolin, travelling overseas for the very first time. When he lands in Narita Airport, his luggage bag is accidentally taken by a Japanese red-crowned crane. Marky Polo and his cousin, Munchie Polo, chase the crane all around Tokyo to retrieve Marky’s bag, and manage to see some of Tokyo’s famous attractions along the way.
The kids were all very excited when we received ‘Marky Polo in Tokyo’, especially when they heard that the book included Augmented Reality (AR) features. (Their first experience with AR was with the ‘World of Science’ books, also published by World Scientific Education, and reviewed by N HERE.)
Using the AR features is really simple: all you need to do is to download the app, scan the book’s barcode to download and activate it, then scan the pages with the Marky Polo icons! The kids had so much fun scanning the pages, and “seeing” Tokyo through images on Google maps, YouTube videos, and the websites of the places of interest.
As with Emily Lim-Leh’s previous books, we were introduced to a new animal: a pangolin, and the AR features brought the pangolin right into our home! We also learnt about some of the animals native to Japan, like the Japanese red-crowned crane, and the Akita-Inu.
This book was a breath of fresh air for us, as we learnt so much about Tokyo through Marky Polo’s luggage-chasing adventure. The different attractions were introduced in a fun and interesting manner, as Marky follows the crane around Tokyo, and we all laughed when Marky ended up being part of the samurai performance at the Samurai Museum.
Now that we can’t travel overseas, we have to look for other ways to learn about various countries, and reading is definitely a fantastic way to introduce new places to kids. Can’t wait to see where Marky Polo will travel to next, and what other adventures he will have there!
