Khong Guan Biscuit Shop at Agus Salim

Ever since we relocated to Jakarta late last year, I’ve been on the lookout for familiar brands whenever we go to the supermarket, because I’m a comfort-zone kind of person. I know there are good local brands available, but when it comes to things like food, I prefer brands that I’ve grown up with, maybe because they remind me of home.

On one of our many car-rides, I noticed a large Khong Guan Biscuit Shop at Pasar Mayestik, and decided that I HAD to check it out. I know the biscuits are available at supermarkets too, but the idea of going to a Khong Guan shop just seemed more appealing, so I asked C if we could check it out one day. Interestingly, our driver said he knew of another Khong Guan Biscuit Shop, and brought us to the one at Agus Salim on a Sunday afternoon.

I got really excited when I first saw it as I thought it was a three-storey shop, but there was only one level open for shopping. It looked super run-down from the outside, but the shopping area was pretty well-maintained, and the products were displayed neatly. The auntie in me checked the boxes of biscuits for dust, and was pleased that there wasn’t any.

We weren’t sure if it was even open!

N was busy picking out all the biscuits that appealed to him, while I kept telling C that we were in biscuit heaven. The shop carries the Nissin, Monde, and Khong Guan brands, so you can imagine how many different types of biscuits there were in the shop. There were also large packs of “brandless” biscuits at the back of the store, like what you’ll find in a traditional biscuit shop, lending it a little of the old-school effect.

These were so cheap! About SGD0.70 for the green/orange ones on the left, and SGD0.50 for the animal-shaped packets on the right.

Can I buy these please?

C said we could probably survive on biscuits alone for about two weeks if there was an apocalypse

We spent about SGD25 for everything in the photo above plus a few other packets which we asked our driver to pick out for his kids. Quite a good deal, I think!
